Dark Alliance is an entirely new action-oriented game that still hangs on to a few traditional RPG elements, such as experience points and skill-based character advancement. However, the similarities between the PC Baldur's Gate series and this PlayStation 2 title are in setting and name alone. Interplay's Black Isle Studios and Snowblind have teamed up to publish and develop the first console entry in the Baldur's Gate series, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. The popular PC RPG series Baldur's Gate provided a solid RPG experience while remaining true to the D&D license. The archer/fighter/magician combination can be a little bland, so I appreciate the second version for its differences.The popular pen-and-paper role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons has spawned numerous translations in the realm of video and computer gaming. ![]() It falls short of a 10 out of 10 games because it lacks diversity. However, if you're looking to prepare for Baldur Gates 3, this game is great. Hard mode can be challenging, as you can be killed with just one hit. ![]() Depending on your chosen difficulty level, it has a PS1 feel and can be consuming. If you're a fan of D&D or the slash genre, I highly recommend this game. But if you're up for a challenge, the Archer may be the wild card you need in this game. Your preferred style of play will determine which character is best suited for you. The storyline is straightforward, making it a great adventure/role-playing game. I particularly enjoyed the challenge of playing as the Archer. While the game remains the same, selecting other characters can lead to unique experiences. I wanted to try something different this time and went with the Archer. I fondly remember playing this game 20 years ago, always choosing the elf character. The game play of Baldur's Gate is reminiscent of the classic PS1 era. ![]()
